Armenian new parliament sets date of first meeting

The National Assembly (Parliament) of Armenia of the 6th convocation will gather for its 1st meeting on May 18, the chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic, Tigran Mukuchyan said.

"The 1st meeting of the new parliament of Armenia will be held on May 18, an official announcement about this will be made in the upcoming days," the head of the commission said, Tass reports.

At the 1st meeting, the chairman and three of his deputies will be elected, one of whom must represent the opposition. The elections of the chairmen of the permanent committees of the chamber will also be held.

In accordance with the requirement of the Constitution, on the day of the 1st meeting of the parliament, the government will resign. Accepting the resignation, the president will instruct the members of the government to continue performing their duties until the formation of a new cabinet of ministers.
