Armenian nuclear power plant to be under repair until July 9

The Armenian nuclear power plant in Metsamor was halted for a planned two-month long repair and refueling, the ministry of energy infrastructures and natural resources said.

The nuclear power plant, which is located 30 kilometers west of Yerevan, will be reconnected to the power grid on July 9, ARKA reported.

The new plant is supposed to operate at twice the capacity of the Soviet-constructed facility. The plant currently generates some 35 percent of Armenia's electricity.

In March 2014, the Armenian government decided to extend the plant’s service life because of delay in building a new unit. The facility will be halted for another planned two-month long repair in 2018, following which a plan of actions, designed to extend its service life, will be completed.
