Atambayev orders financial support for banners promoting traditional Kyrgyz women's clothing and discouraging Islamic full veils

President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev instructed the Chief of Staff of his Office to provide financial assistance for hanging banners depicting young women in Kyrgyz traditional national clothing and Islamic full veil across the country.

The given banners were hung in Bishkek several days earlier. The text in Kyrgyz on the banners asks: my poor people, where are we moving to? The banners sparked hot debates in the society: one side supported the idea, saying Kyrgyz women never wore the clothing as worn by many women now practicing Islam in Kyrgyzstan. Another side slammed the idea, saying such banners will divide the society.

“Let's not confuse cultures... Arab, Pakistani, other cultures. This is imposition of alien culture. We have our own culture. They even try to change words. I have read the Quran more than once and have not found anything of that sort. Culture of other peoples should not be imposed on us,” the President underscored.
