Azerbaijan and Georgia to jointly promote peace and stability in Caucasus

Parliament Speaker: Georgia, Azerbaijan play “important role” in building peace in South Caucasus

Georgia and Azerbaijan have always played an important role in building peace in the South Caucasus region, the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili said following a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Sahiba Gafarova.

Papuashvili said the visit of his colleague to Georgia was "symbolic and of special significance" in the year that marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"Georgia and Azerbaijan have always played an important role in building peace in the region. We agree that both countries should use this historic role to jointly and with greater effort promote peace, stability for the well-being of our countries, our peoples and the region as a whole," the head of the Georgian legislative body said.

Papuashvili also spoke about the subjects discussed at the meeting with Gafarova and focused on the “important” role of Georgia and Azerbaijan in ensuring peaceful processes in the region.

"At the meeting we talked about the strategic partnership between our countries and historical people-to-people ties. We are grateful for the strong support of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia," he told reporters.

Papuashvili added on his part, he had reaffirmed Georgia's support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
