Azerbaijan celebrates Eid al-Adha

Azerbaijani people are celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of the two most important festivals in the Muslim calendar.

According to the fatwa issued by the Caucasian Muslims Office on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, the holiday falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah in the lunar-based Islamic calendar.

Azerbaijan’s Cabinet of Ministers declared September 1 and 2 as non-working days throughout the country for Eid al-Adha.

The Eid al-Adha prayer in Baku will be performed on September 1 at 08:00 am in Ajdarbay mosque and at 09:00 am in Taza Pir mosque.

The Eid prayer in both mosques was performed under the leadership of the imams. The prayers to the spirit of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the motherland, as well as the rules of sacrifice were read during the sermons. Following the prayer, the people congratulated each other on the occasion of the holiday .

Along with the capital, mosques in all regions of Azerbaijan performed the holiday prayer this morning.

Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has congratulated the nation on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. He recalled that Islam played an exceptional role in the formation of Azerbaijani people's outlook and in their national and cultural development and that the progressive Islamic values and traditions have always been cherished in Azerbaijan.

"Eid al-Adha, which embodies the completion of Islam as a religion and its divine revelation as a spiritual and moral way of salvation, is a holiday that encourages mercy, solidarity, and brotherhood in people. On this blessed day Muslims get the opportunity to demonstrate their readiness for any self-sacrifice in the name of Allah and experience the joy of being close to the Almighty," the Azerbaijani president said.

He noted that the people of Azerbaijan have always respected national and spiritual values and traditions, and fulfilled their religious ceremonies, including Eid al-Adha, with great enthusiasm.

"Sacrifices are made in the name of God, large-scale charity work is underway, prayers are said for the tranquility and prosperity of our state, the undying memory of our martyrs is revered in all parts of our country these days. I am confident that this year's Eid al-Adha will also mark a triumph of the national and spiritual solidarity, noble deeds, compassion and mercy in our society," Ilham Aliyev stressed.
