Azerbaijan reveals a spy network at Defence Ministry, operating since 1988 in favor of Armenia

A spy network operating at the Ministry of Defence, since 1988, has been revealed in Azerbaijan, abc.az reports.

State Security Service’s director Madat Guliyev has stated that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev gave relevant instructions to Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov, and the investigative team is conducting an investigation.

"Those people were engaged in espionage activities, and not a day or two days. This treacherous network took root in 1988-1990. The disclosure of that betrayal is the result of proper execution of President’s tasks by the Ministry of Defence," Guliyev said.

The group of soldiers and civilians secretly collaborated with intelligence services of Armenia. As a result of investigation of the appeared information on provocation, being prepared by Armenian intelligence services and troops against the positions of the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry and the settlements in Terter district, it was found out that the group of military men and civilians committed treason against Azerbaijan on the basis of material interests. They were in close cooperation with enemy intelligence and periodically transferred information containing military secrets to the enemy side.
