As a result of the operation carried out from April 4 to April 5, up to 70 people were killed and around 20 units of Armenian military equipment were destroyed by the Azerbaijani armed forces. 16 people over the past two days were lost by Azerbaijan, a message spread by the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan reads.
The Azerbaijani Armed Forces destroyed the headquarters of the military base in the village of Madagiz, which is a strategically important military base located on the main road leading to the city of Aghdere, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said.
Three battle tanks and personnel deployed to the trenches, intended for the conduct of a circular firing, were also destroyed on the contact line in the evening of April 4, the Defense Ministry added.
The military units of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in the directions of Khojavend and Fuzuli districts, in order to minimize the risk of shelling settlements by the opposing side, destroyed two enemy tanks with personnel and up to five wheeled vehicles with military equipment.
Recall, on the night of April 2 all frontier positions of Azerbaijan were exposed to heavy fire from large-caliber weapons, mortars, grenade launchers and guns. In addition, Azerbaijani settlements near the front line, densely populated by civilians, were shelled.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20% of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US, are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
