Azerbaijani grand master Shahriyar Mammadyarov has become the winner of Shamkir Chess Tournament commemorating late grandmaster Vugar Gashimov in Azerbaijan's Shamkir.
He and Italy`s Fabiano Caruana both scored 8 points, but Mammadyarov claimed the title thanks to a win over the Italian in the 8th round.
The leaders' board is as follows: Mamedyarov - 6 points; Fabiano Caruana (the US) - 6, Anish Giri (the Netherlands) - 5.5, Sergey Karyakin (Russia) - 5, Rauf Mammadov (Azerbaijan) - 4.5, Pendyala Harikrishna (India), Teymur Radjabov, Eltaj Safarli (Azerbaijan) - 4, Pavel Eljanov (Ukraine) - 3.5, Hou Yifan (China) - 2.5.
