Azerbaijan’s Zangilan district: 22 years since occupation

22 years have passed since Azerbaijan’s Zangilan district was occupied by Armenian Armed Forces. Zangilan, situated on the Baku-Julfa-Nakhchivan railway, is of great strategic importance, but its area is only 700 square kilometers, 35,000 people were living in Zangilan. The district's population, being surrounded after the occupation of the Gubadli and Jabrayil regions, went to the Iranian territory, Trend reports.

The largest plane forest in Europe was also located in the district. Now Armenians are cutting down these trees and selling them to foreign countries. Valuable trees, molybdenum, marble, gold, granite and other mineral resources are also currently being plundered by Armenians.

Zangilan's territory is also rich in archaeological and architectural monuments, the largest of which is the the ruined medieval city known as 'Shahri Sharifam'.

Before the occupation, Zangilan consisted of one city, one settlement and 83 villages. 188 residents of Zangilan were killed in the Karabakh war and 44 are listed as missing.
