An "Immortal Regiment" patriotic initiative honoring victory over Nazism in the Great Patriotic War kicked off in the Russian Information and Cultural Center (RICC) in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, the Association of Russian Youth of Azerbaijan (ATYA) said Saturday, Sputnik International reported.
"The action was jointly organized by the Association of Russian Youth of Azerbaijan and the Union of Cossacks of Azerbaijan. The first stage of the event is opening of a gallery. Everyone can add photos of their relatives, participants of the Great Patriotic War, to this gallery to pass on the memory to the succeeding generations," the association said in a statement.
The gallery’s opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Head of local office of the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) Alexei Konnov, the statement added.
The "Immortal Regiment" campaign commemorates the Great Patriotic War soldiers in marches held across Russia and other countries on May 9, celebrated as Victory Day in Russia and former Soviet republics. During the marches, people carry photographs of their ancestors who participated in the war.
This year, commemorative marches are planned in the United States, Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and many other countries.
