Borrell: sanctions require “strategic patience”

Most EU member states argue the sanctions are working, but it will take time before their full impact on the Russian economy shows.

“Sanctions require strategic patience because it can take a long time for them to have the desired effect,” EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell on Saturday wrote in one of his blog posts.

Since sanctions on Russia would be “taking effect”, Borrell said that the EU’s sanctions, including restrictions on the purchase of Russian oil, “remain an important instrument of political action” but acknowledged that it “may take a long time” for them to have an impact.

“Even if sanctions do not change the Russian trajectory in the short-term, that does not mean they are useless,” Borrell said
