Caspian Five signs declaration on protection of Caspian sea environment

The Prosecutors General of Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan signed a joint Declaration on the protection of the environment and biological resources of the Caspian Sea today on the sidelines of an international conference of Heads of Prosecutor's Offices in St. Petersburg, emphasizing the priority nature of preventive measures aimed at protecting the Caspian.

"The Caspian Sea is of great strategic importance for all five states, connecting the territories of our countries into a single ecological system," Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said before signing the document, noting that the joint activities envisaged by the declaration will have a positive impact.

There are plenty of problems in the Caspian - oil production and its negative consequences, emissions of hazardous production wastes, illegal development of the coastal strip.

"This meeting and signing of the document will lay the foundation for further five-sided interaction in the Caspian. I am sure that it will be intense and productive," Krasnov expressed confidence, proposing to hold meetings at the expert level in early 2022 in order to discuss cooperation issues in the field of environmental protection of the Caspian Sea in more detail.
