China consistently opposes unilateral U.S. sanctions against Iran, the Chinese foreign ministry's spokesman Geng Shuang said amid reports that Washington is expected to announce that buyers of Iranian oil must halt imports soon or face sanctions.
The spokesman, speaking at a daily news briefing, said China’s bilateral cooperation with Iran was in accordance with the law, Reuters reported.
Geng said Beijing opposes Washington's "unilateral sanctions and long-armed jurisdiction." However, Geng gave no indication what Beijing might do if Washington went ahead with sanctions against China.
U.S. officials told the Washington Post newspaper earlier that the Trump administration will inform other governments they no longer will be exempt from sanctions.
