China lodges representations with U.S. over its ban on importing Iranian oil

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the ministry has lodged representations with the United States over Washington’s plan to end waivers for Iranian oil imports.

The spokesman stressed that Beijing denounced the decision, saying it opposes "unilateral" sanctions and "long-arm jurisdictions imposed" by the United States.

According to him, the decision from the U.S. will contribute to volatility in the Middle East and in the international energy market.

"Our government is committed to upholding the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies and will play a positive and constructive role in upholding the stability of global energy market," Reuters cited Shuang  as saying.

Washington has announced that all Iran sanction waivers will end by May, sending crude oil prices higher and pressuring importers to stop buying from Tehran.
