China urges dialogue over Karabakh dispute

China on Monday called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to hold political dialogue to resolve their disputes.

Addressing a news conference in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin said: "China calls for all parties to remain calm and exercise restraint on conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan."

"Maintaining peace and stability in the region serves interests of all parties, including Armenia and Azerbaijan," Chinese daily Global Times cited Wang as saying.

"We hope relevant countries will take measures to avoid further escalation and resolve disputes and differences through political dialogue," the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman added.

The Armenian armed forces committed a large-scale provocation, subjecting the positions of the Azerbaijani army to intensive shelling from large-caliber weapons, mortars, and artillery installations of various calibers in the front-line zone on Sept. 27 at 05:00 (Msk). The command of the Azerbaijani Army decided to launch a counter-offensive operation of Azerbaijani troops along the entire front to suppress the combat activity of the Armenian armed forces and ensure the safety of the civilian population. Seven villages of Fizuli and Jabrayil districts, key heights near Talysh, as well as Murovdag were liberated.
