The construction of the international airport in the Fuzuli region liberated from occupation, the foundation of which was laid by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on January 15, is underway, Vice-President of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) Etibar Huseynov told the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, who visited the construction site.

The airport is being built near the village of Mirzajamalli liberated during the Second Karabakh war. Along the road to the future airport, one can observe only the ruins of houses in the villages, completely destroyed by the invaders from the Armenian Armed Forces during the three decades of the Karabakh conflict. Immediately after the end of the war Azerbaijan launched a large-scale program for the restoration of the region.

According to Etibar Huseynov, the airport is being built in accordance with the decree of the President of Azerbaijan. "The length of the runway will be 3 km, width - 45 m. The area of the terminal complex is 60 thousand square meters, the parking lot will be adapted for various types of aircraft. The airport will have taxiways for which an area of 6.5 thousand square meters and 5 thousand square meters will be allocated. The parking lot is designed for 120 cars," he said.

The airport construction site will be demined. "The demining operations are carried out by specialists from the Ministry of Defense, ANAMA, as well as UK experts. They use special equipment to demine the territory. In order to speed up the process, the UK AARDVARK company’s demining equipment was purchased and delivered to the territory allotted for the airport.  As soon as this work is completed, construction of the runway will begin," the vice president of AZAL said.

The airport is expected to be commissioned by the end of this year.
