The global death toll from the novel coronavirus has now passed the 4,000-mark, reaching 4,026, as cases continued to spread.
COVID-19 has infected more than 114,000 people in over 100 countries and territories, mostly concentrated in mainland China, which has seen a slowdown of new infections this past week.
Italy reported a jump in deaths from 97 to 463 Monday. Italy's infection numbers surged to 9,172 — the highest outside China. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said yesterday the government has extended internal travel restrictions to the entire country, after initially locking down the country's northern region in an effort to contain the coronavirus. It effectively locks down 60 million people.
More than 30 states had reported cases by Tuesday morning and at least eight have declared a state of emergency — including Washington, California, Florida, New York, Oregon, Kentucky, Maryland and Utah. The worst-affected states are Washington (162, including 22 deaths), California (114, including the Grand Princess cases with one death), New York (142), Massachusetts (41), Florida (19, two deaths), Oregon (14) and Texas (12).
There have been 20 cases of coronavirus infections reported in Russia so far.
