The day of silence begins in Azerbaijan on September 25, before the referendum on amendments to the country’s constitution, Trend reports.
According to the Election Code, Holding pre-election campaign on the day of voting and a day before the voting is prohibited.
According to the calendar plan approved by Azerbaijan’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the referendum campaign started September 3 and ended September 25.
Recall that on July 18, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on submitting the draft Referendum Act “On making amendments to Azerbaijan’s constitution” to the Constitutional Court. The referendum will be held on September 26, 2016.
In total, the referendum includes 29 amendments to the constitution - 23 to articles of the existing law and 6 newly created articles.
Amendments affect issues such as structure and powers of the government.
According to the Electoral Code of the country, the referendum is considered valid if it will be attended by at least 25% of the voters.
CEC promised to announce plebiscite results before October 21.
This is the third referendum in the history of independent Azerbaijan.
