Death toll from train crash in Turkey climbs to 24

The number of people who died in a railroad accident in northwestern Turkey has reached 24, while 338 others were injured, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdag.

Several cars of a passenger train traveling from Uzunkopru, Edirne province, to Istanbul went off rails near Sarilar village of Tekirdag’s Corlu district.

Akdag said that heavy rain had caused the ground under the rails to collapse, causing the crash.

The train was heading to Istanbul from Edirne, on the border with Greece, with 362 passengers and six crew members on board. Five of its six cars derailed.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has already offered his condolences to the families of those killed in the train crash, CNN Turk reported.
