Dmitry Savelyev to Vestnik Kavkaza: We urge everyone to help to achieve justice for Khojaly

Justice for the Khojaly Tragedy can be achieved if work in this direction continues, head of the Russia-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary friendship group, the Russian State Duma deputy, Dmitry Savelyev, said today in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza on the sidelines of the VI International Humanitarian Forum in Baku.

“I believe that justice in this issue can be achieved. 10 countries have already recognized this terrible tragedy as genocide. I'm confident that with joint efforts, with everyone's help, with help of Baku activists at various international platforms, we will be able to achieve world-wide recognition of this tragedy as genocide of the Azerbaijani people. This work is currently underway, we must continue it,” Dmitry Savelyev urged.

“Just recently we attended the opening of a monument Turkey's Kayseri, dedicated to innocent victims of Khojaly. I said there, speaking to foreign students who study at Kayseri universities, among other people, that when they return to their countries, they should open the eyes of their politicians on what happened in Khojaly. I urged them to help us to achieve recognition of this tragedy as genocide of the Azerbaijani people,” he said.

He noted that this tragedy had such a huge scale that it cannot be forgotten, no matter how much time passes. “Everyone knows about the tragedy in Belarusian village of Khatyn, when 139 people were burned in their own houses. Everyone remembers these 139 victims. 613 people were killed in Khojaly. It's impossible to calmly look at photos of this terrible tragedy," he concluded.
