Angela Merkel refuses to open Germany's borders after her decision to let refugees into the country was severely criticized. The reintroduction of border controls in Germany in connection with the influx of refugees proves that the migration crisis is about to get out of control. "Germany, shocked by the unprecedented flow of refugees, has restored controls along the border with Austria in a desperate attempt to resolve the crisis that is checking the strength of the limits of European solidarity,’’ the publication Politico reports.
The point is that the authorities decided to use the German Code of the Schengen agreement in order to temporarily restore border controls with the EU countries. The authorities of several other EU countries also did this, RIA Novosti reports.
From the point of view of the media, this solution is a ‘striking 180-degree turn,’ especially when you consider that in recent weeks Chancellor Merkel invited refugees to Germany. The decision announced by the German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere was an unpleasant surprise and marked a "significant escalation of the crisis." Berlin successfully suspended the Schengen system, which many people considered to be the epitome of European integration, the publication reports.
Some European politicians believe that the entire Schengen system may fail in the end. This would mean devastating consequences for Europe in general. The authorities of neighboring Austria and Germany, in their turn, confirmed that they had no choice, but they should cooperate with the authorities of Germany in their decision to strengthen border controls. It is obvious that Germany closed its borders: the European system couldn’t cope with the crisis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria Sebastian Kurz said.
The Director of the Institute of Strategic Planning and Forecasting, Professor Alexander Gusev, made a statement in an interview with a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza that the current situation in Germany made Angela Merkel drastically change her position regarding the reception of migrants.
A senior fellow at the Center for European Studies (University) of the MFA of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Olenchenko, shared his opinion with Vestnik Kavkaza about causes of the change in the position of German Chancellor in relation to refugees.
"I think that the policy is not only a strategy, not just tactics, but also the current moment. It is connected with the fact that there is some moment and the slogan of the moment. The political slogan was "we will receive everybody.’’ Now it has now begun to take practical features that lie in the fact that it is estimated to cost 6 billion euros for Germany in order for the EU to receive the refugees. Moreover, this sum of money must be found anywhere,’’ the expert said.
