Dubravka Simonovic to visit Georgia

The United Nation's Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Dubravka Simonovic, will visit Georgia from 15 to 19 February to assess the situation of violence against women and girls in the country and gather first-hand information from victims of violence.

The Special Rapporteur will meet with government authorities and civil society representatives. In addition to Tbilisi, she will visit the Kakheti and Shida Qartli regions.

She will visit victims of domestic violence, a camp for internally displaced persons and she also will meet with individual victims of gender-based violence and minority women.

"Violence against women continues to be one of the most pervasive human rights violations globally, affecting every woman worldwide," she said, noting that states have a primary responsibility to take effective action to eliminate violence against women.

She thanked the Georgian government for the invitation to conduct the official visit to the country. Following the visit, Simonovic will present a report on the situation, Georgia Online writes.
