EMERCOM recommends not to drive on Georgian Military Highway

The cars, driving on the Georgian Military Highway, the passage on which is allowed only during the day time  because of the damage of the road cloth, have to wait for  eight hours in line. Due to this EMERCOM of North Ossetia  strongly recommends not to drive on this route.

"In connection with the damage of the road cloth on the Georgian Military Road, the traffic on the Georgian territory at the checkpoint Upper Lars to enter the Russian Federation and to exit from the Russian Federation is limited in the night time. The registration of lorries and passenger transport is carried out from 4:30 to 17:30,’’  RIA Novosti cites the message of the ministry.

The checkpoints Upper Lars (Russia) and Dariayali (Georgia) are also valid only in the daytime due to the continuing threat of mudslides on the territory of Georgia during the night, due to which the vehicles accumulate and traffic jams appear. The number of persons on the checkpoint Upper Lars is twice bigger then the capacities of the checkpoint

Therefore EMERCOM asks tourists, passengers and cargo shippers to refuse from trips to Georgia. "For those who for objective reasons can not postpone the trip, we inform that the average period of stay in the queue at the entrance to the checkpoint Upper Lars  is about 8 hours. Those who came to the checkpoint in the afternoon, most likely, will have to wait during the night,’’ the rescuers underline.

The department reminded of the existence of the alternative routes: by air, ferry to Batumi, as well as through the crossing point Yarag-Kazmalyar via Azerbaijan.

As the Department of Regional Development of Georgia roads said to Vestnik Kavkaza, repair of the damaged section of the Georgian Military Road goes according to plan, with the expectation of opening a full-fledged automobile communication no later than in mid-August.

"We now have, as well as the Russian side, a temporary mode of work of the Georgian Military Road: it operates from 5:30 am to 19:30 pm, and in the night it is closed for repair works. The repair works are still ongoing, we hope that they will be completed in two to three weeks,’’ the department said.
