EU Council and the European Parliament agreed on a mechanism for the temporary suspension of the visa-free regime for Georgia and Ukraine, which is a prerequisite for the abolition of visas. The European Parliament is to vote on the issue next week, the EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, said.
"Welcome the agreement on the suspension mechanism. Urge the EU Council and the European Parliament to decide as soon as possible," he posted on his Twitter page.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the EU, Natalie Sabanadze, in turn, explained that activation of the suspension mechanism is a prerequisite for the abolition of visas.
According to her, the EU ambassadors have agreed on a compromise with the European Parliament, which then will have to vote on it.
