EU rejects Pashinyan's ideas to impede Karabakh talks

We shouldn't strive to invent a certain mechanism in the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement "only for the sake of novelty," it is better to act within the current format, EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said at the joint press point with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Pashinyan said in Brussels that he is going to discuss the format of Nagorno-Karabakh talks, underscoring the need to involve Karabakh separatists in the negation process as a party.

Johannes Hahn noted that during the tenure of the new Armenian prime minister, it was possible to hold new meetings, including between the foreign ministers, which is already a progress.

"As to our support, I think we should leave it to the current format where the process is discussed not to create something new. But in general it is more about the confidence building measures," News.am cited Hahn as saying.

He explained that the EU can contribute from outside, supporting the whole region, to enable cooperation among countries in many areas.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a working visit to Brussels on March 4-5, during which he held talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, European Council President Donald Tusk and EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, as well as addressed the European Parliament.

The Russian Foreign Ministry earlier also rejected the possibility of changing the format of negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement.

Editor-in-chief of 'National Defense' magazine Igor Korotchenko, speaking with the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that Pashinyan continues to insist on the need to change the format of the talks to impede them, in fact, repeating the strategy of his predecessor Serzh Sargsyan.

"Yerevan and Pashinyan do not want to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and therefore they make proposals acceptable neither in terms of international law nor in terms of Azerbaijan’s position, the second part to this bilateral conflict," he said in the first place.

"The fact that within the framework of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict there is the problem of Nagorno-Karabakh in those administrative borders in which the NKAO existed during Soviet times as part of AzSSR, and there is a problem of seven other occupied regions of Azerbaijan around Karabakh, whose legal status Armenia does not question, recognizing them as Azerbaijani territories. But Yerevan keeps silence about it and continues to hold the occupied territories," Igor Korotchenko noted.

"Therefore, Pashinyan’s position is understandable - it is acutely selfish and does consider the existing realities. Of course, he doesn’t intend to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in practical terms, and therefore propose initiatives which will not be realized," the editor-in-chief of 'National Defense' magazine concluded.
