EU summit opens in Brussels

EU summit opens in Brussels

This year's final two-day summit of the heads of state and government of the 28 EU countries will be opened in Brussels today. It is expected to consider the problems of migration and the conditions of the British referendum. The leaders will also discuss the process of post-crisis economic recovery, the delayed process of creating a banking union, and the construction of the EU energy union.

"I have asked the Presidency to put on the agenda of COREPER this coming Friday the proposal to roll over the sanctions on Russia for another 6 months. This will be a direct consequence of the March European Council conclusion, according to which the duration of the restrictive measures against the Russian Federation should be clearly linked to the complete implementation of the Minsk agreements," European Council President Donald Tusk said.

This means that the sanctions won't be discussed at the summit, TASS reports. The current package of economic sanctions against Russia will be completed on January 31, but they will be extended until July 31 of next year.
