UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed efforts on diplomatic resolution in Ukraine and opening of humanitarian corridors for those in need during their meeting in Ankara, Guterres’ office said in its statement Monday.

"The Secretary-General expressed his support for Turkey’s on-going diplomatic efforts in relation to the" Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the UN statement reads. "He and President Erdogan reaffirmed that their common objective is to end to the war as soon as possible and to create conditions to end the suffering of civilians."

The statement also notes that Guterres and Erdogan reaffirmed their mutual goal to achieve prompt settlement in Ukraine, to create conditions for aiding civilians and agreed to continue their contacts on these issues.

They also discussed the impact of the special military operation "on regional and global issues, including energy, food and finance," the statement says.

After his Turkey visit, Guterres will head to Moscow on Tuesday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, and then to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday, according to his spokesperson.
