Erdogan ratifies readmission agreement with EU

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ratified the readmission agreement signed with the EU, which is necessary for the abolition of visas to the Schengen area.

The Agreement will enter into force upon publication in the official government herald. The law, which was previously approved by the Parliament, provides for surrender of persons illegally residing on the territories of EU countries and Turkey, News.Az reports.

This agreement is a prerequisite for lifting the visa regime. The abolition of visa regime is planned for July 1, 2016.

Turkish European Affairs Minister Volkan Bozkir said earlier that he is not 'hopeful' over the prospects of overcoming a deadlock on part of the country's migrant deal with the European Union. The minister said Brussels had not responded positively to a Turkish request for new political consultations over the five remaining criteria.
