Yesterday, a political provocation was carried out against Azerbaijan:  the national flag was desecrated in Yerevan at the championship opening ceremony.

Today, on the 1st day of the European Weightlifting Championship, this year taking place in Yerevan, the Turkish athlete Cansu Bektas became the 1st champion.

Bektas competed in the category up to 45 kg and showed the best result, lifting 72 kg in the clean and jerk.

Thanks to her victory, today, the Turkish National Anthem Istiklal Marsi was played in Yerevan.

After the awards ceremony, in an interview with sports media, Cansu Bektas said that she dedicates her victory to Azerbaijan that became a victim of a provocation committed a day earlier in Yerevan.

At the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting  Championship, one of the local organizers, Aram Nikolyan, set fire to the flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan. After this political anti-Azerbaijani action, the Azerbaijani team decided to withdraw from the competition. Tonight the team returned to Baku.

However, a very strong Turkish team remained at the tournament, and one can expect that the Turkish anthem and the dedication of medals to allied Azerbaijan will be heard in Yerevan more than once.
