Ex-PM Gakharia’s party addresses Chief Prosecutor’s Office to investigate ruling party’s allegations of coup attempt

The For Georgia political party, which was recently founded by former PM Giorgi Gakharia, has officially addressed the country’s Chief Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the allegations of the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze of an alleged coup attempt, Agenda.ge reports.

Kobakhidze accused Gakharia and the United National Movement opposition party of a coup attempt back in February 2021, when Gakharia was still the country’s PM.

He stated that Gakharia allegedly supported the postponement of the arrest of the head of the United National Movement opposition party Nika Melia to allow the UNM to prepare for a coup.

Kobakhidze told Rustavi 2 that the ruling party received information about the UNM’s planned coup from Kyiv and the UNM Tbilisi office. However they did not inform Gakharia, because they 'already had suspicions about him.'

He also said that up to 20 employees of the interior and defence ministries, who are not identified, were also involved in the process.

Gakharia’s party says that the accusations are ‘very serious’ and they must be investigated.
