Georgia's former PM Giorgi Gakharia, who resigned and left the ruling party back in February and recently created a new political party For Georgia, has responded to criticism and allegations of treason by the ruling Georgian Dream party founder Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Gakharia tweeted that "events are developing in an interesting and faster way than expected’ and that ‘without gossiping, we unite for Georgia."
Ivanishvili, who has made his first public statement earlier today since leaving the Georgian politics back in January 2021, has dismissed reports that Gakharia’s party is ‘his project.’
Ivanishvili also said that Gakharia betrayed the ruling party and the Georgian state when he resigned in February 2021.
Gakharia stated in February that his resignation was connected with the upcoming arrest of the head of the United National Movement opposition party Nika Melia. He stated then that Melia violated the law when he refused to post his bail.
However, Gakharia said that Melia’s arrest amid election-related tension in the country would have further complicated the situation.
"Unfortunately, I could not make an agreement with the ruling party (that it was not the right time for Melia’s detention) and have decided to resign," Agenda.ge cited Gakharia as saying.
Ivanishvili said in his today’s statement that the reason named by Gakharia for his resignation ‘was against the rule of law and the enforcement of the law.’
