The head of the Georgian government, Irakli Garibashvili, congratulated the republic's residents on the Georgian Language Day.
"It is the duty of each of us to treat the language with due respect and to preserve, develop and pass on to our future generations this real treasury", the prime minister said in a statement.
He emphasized that language is one of the main signs of a nation's identity. He also added that it is the Georgian language that unites the identity of Georgia.
Mother Language Day was established in Georgia to commemorate the events of April 14, 1978. On this day 40 years ago, mass demonstrations took place in Tbilisi, thanks to which the Georgian language retained the state language's status in the Constitution of the Georgian SSR.
