Georgia continues to elect parliament

Georgia continues to elect parliament

Today, the parliamentary elections have begun again for the residents of the two regions of Georgia. The reason are the serious violations documented at four polling stations during voting and during the counting of votes in the previous elections, held  on October 8th.

At a polling station in  Kiziladzhlo the elections were interrupted during the voting process, due to the unrest near the polling station, and in Dzhihashkari and Ganmukhuri the polling stations were destroyed during the counting of votes.

Despite the fact that the re-elections will be attended by only 2 thousand 251 voters in the Zugdidi district and 1 thousand 436 voters in the Marneuli district, this election can significantly affect the results, the Georgian media inform

According to the reports, a block ‘Alliance of Patriots’ has all chances to leave the Parliament: by the proportional system it has 5.01% of the vote. If the election results in the Zugdidi district will reduce its chances for at least 0.02%, the block will leave.

In this case, the six seats, which currently belong to the ‘Alliance of Patriots’ will go to the ruling party ‘Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia’. Thus, the power party will have 73 deputy mandates, and this without taking into account the potential places that the party can get in the second round of elections in the single-member districts.

Note, that to obtain a parliamentary majority, and thus the status of the ruling party the ‘Georgian Dream’ has to get at least 76 seats.

It is difficult to predict the results of re-vote, Sputnik Georgia reports, although their outcome will determine whether the second round will be held in the Zugdidi and Marneuli districts.

At present, a majority candidate of the ‘Georgian Dream’ in the Marneuli single-mandate district is losing to a candidate from the former ruling party ‘United National Movement’ (UNM), and in the Zugdidi district a candidate from the ‘Georgian Dream’ is ahead of a UNM candidate.

In order to prevent holding of the second round of elections in the Marneuli and Zugdidi district, it is necessary that attendance is more than 50% over the whole region.
