Georgia is celebrating National Flag Day today. The current national symbol of Georgia, also known as the Five Cross Flag, was officially introduced in January 2004.
While speaking about the importance of the national symbol, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said that ‘it inspires a patriotic spirit and great pride in each of us [Georgians]’.
"The national flag of Georgia contains the history of our country and people, the values and aspirations that we will always uphold. I am sure that the time when this symbol of Georgian statehood will be erected next to the flags of the member states of the European family is not far away," Gakharia said.
President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili has congratulated the public, children, army, doctors, police officers, and emigrants on the National Flag Day from the Orbeliani Palace, where Georgian flag was raised.
"I would like to congratulate this day to youth, children, everyone who has been living under the state flag of our country for 30 years; Who does not remember the time when the flag of another country was flying in this country – this is the greatest happiness. The national flag of Georgia is a symbol of our independence and freedom," Agenda.ge cited Zurabishvili as saying.
The national flag was raised at Vaziani Military Base, at the Georgian Ministry of Defense and on all military bases of Georgia’s defence forces.
The State Council of Heraldry has congratulated the public on National Flag day and called of Georgian citizens to raise the national flag on their balconies and homes to honour Georgian warriors and heroes.
The flag of Georgia which was used before the current one was a three-coloured one (red, black and white) first adopted for the 1918-1921 First Democratic Republic of Georgia.
