Georgian health officials have warned of a potential third wave of coronavirus in the country if individuals refuse to receive the vaccine and act in line with recommendations.
Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze stated earlier today that new cases of coronavirus are surging amid the low rate of vaccination and wearing of face masks.
He said that currently 51 per cent of the country’s population wear face masks which is mandatory in open and closed locations and about 1,000 individuals are receiving the coronavirus vaccine on a daily basis.
11,603 individuals have received the coronavirus vaccine in the country since March 15 which is a low figure. We should vaccine at least 3,000 individuals daily,” Gamkrelidze said.
He stated that the supply of vaccines is sufficient and starting today individuals over 55 will be able to receive either AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccines.
Gamkrelidze said that the country has plans to use the Chinese Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines starting this month, after the vaccines receive approval from the World Health Organisation.
If we do not want to enter a third wave of coronavirus we should get vaccinated and act in line with recommendations. We will not be able to defeat the pandemic without the vaccination of at least 60 per cent of the country’s population by the end of the year,” Gamkrelidze said.
