Hermitage introduces ‘moratorium’ on exhibitions in US, Europe

The State Hermitage Museum has introduced a one-year moratorium on exhibitions in Europe and the US for the first time since the 1990s, when this was done for security reasons and because of high financial risks, according to its website.

"Hermitage is introducing a one-year moratorium on exhibitions in Europe and the US," the statement said.

Russian artwork will not be sent abroad in the next year, the museum’s director, Mikhail Piotrovsky, said in May, citing current geopolitical tensions.

The museum is planning an expansive exhibition program inside Russia, with current exhibitions in Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Omsk and Vyborg being just a few on the list.

"Hermitage Museum has always been and will be actively represented in museums across Russia," the statement said.
