The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has facilitated the handover of the bodies of those killed in action following the recent escalation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
"Our priority is to help the families of those missing in action and who still do not know the fate of their loved ones," ICRC Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, Patrick Vial, said, adding that "it is also important for the sides to have the bodies returned and so provide answers for the families".
Recall, as Vestnik Kavkaza reported, Baku and Yerevan have exchanged the bodies of soldiers who died during the clashes in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
Recall, on the night of April 2 all frontier positions of Azerbaijan were exposed to heavy fire from large-caliber weapons, mortars, grenade launchers and guns. In addition, Azerbaijani settlements near the front line, densely populated by civilians, were shelled.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20% of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
