Idrisov and Amano sign agreement on establishing low-enriched uranium bank

Kazakh Foreign Minister Erlan Idrisov and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano signed an agreement on the establishment of a bank of low-enriched uranium in the republic.

In his speech after the signing ceremony, the head of Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry called the creation of this bank a historic moment, explaining that it is "a unique mechanism of security."

According to him, the bank will guarantee access to low-enriched uranium for the IAEA member states in cases where they cannot get it on the global commercial market. The creation of the bank will make a significant contribution to strengthening global nuclear safety, Idrisov stressed.

The funds for its creation, amounting to about 150 million dollars, are given by the Foundation 'Initiative to Reduce the Nuclear Threat' (50 million dollars), USA (49.54 million dollars), the United Arab Emirates (10 million dollars), the EU (25 million euros), Kuwait (10 million dollars) and Norway (5 million dollars), TASS notes.
