Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijan does not want war and bloodshed in Nagorno-Karabakh

The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the opening of the 7th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), said that Baku wants to resolve the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh peacefully.

"We are demonstrating patience and constructionism, although we have been living under the cease-fire for more than 20 years. And today we are trying to resolve the conflict peacefully. We do not want war and bloodshed," he said.

At the same time the head of state pointed out that there are all the necessary international mechanisms in place for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, but they do not work .

"There are mechanisms for the resolution of the conflict, there are four UN Security Council resolutions demanding withdrawal of Armenian occupying forces from Azerbaijan’s territory, unfortunately, they are not implemented," Ilham Aliyev said.

Recall, on the night of April 2 all frontier positions of Azerbaijan were exposed to heavy fire from large-caliber weapons, mortars, grenade launchers and guns. In addition, Azerbaijani settlements near the front line, densely populated by civilians, were shelled.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20% of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US, are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
