At first, Azerbaijan and Armenia can agree on the basic principles of a peace agreement, initial them, and then continue work on the text of the peace treaty itself, President Ilham Aliyev said today.
"We are moving quite quickly in the negotiation process. I believe that work on the text of the peace treaty, at least the basic principles, can be completed within a few months",
Ilham Aliyev said.
To speed up the process of agreeing on the main provisions of the document, the Armenian authorities should amend the Basic Law (Constitution) of the country, since it contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. This is unacceptable for Baku, the Azerbaijani leader noted.
Negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia are being conducted on a bilateral basis now, and this is already yielding significant results. Although a peace treaty has not yet been signed, Baku and Yerevan have delimited the common border, Ilham Aliyev added.
