Iran offered Syrian president Assad and his family asylum

Iran offered Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his family asylum in the Islamic Republic, from where he could continue to command his military campaign in Syria, Lebanon's al-Mayadeen news reported Saturday.

Iranian intelligence minister Mahmoud Alavi told al-Mayadeen that a major general in the Iranian Army's Quds Force extended the offer to Assad and his family, but he refused.

According to Alavi, Assad said that "his family is like the rest of the Syrian families and will remain in Damascus."

Alavi also claimed that the "conspiracy against Syria" began after Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group pledged to stand with Damascus following Lebanon's 2006 war with Israel.
