Tehran police will no longer arrest women for breaches of Islamic codes, the Iranian capital’s police chief Brig. Gen. Hossein Rahimi said.
"Based on a society-oriented, educational approach, the police will not arrest those who don’t respect Islamic values. It will instead educate them," the Islamic Republic News Agency cited him as saying.
Younger and more liberal-minded Iranian women have long pushed the boundaries of the official dress code, wearing loose headscarves that don't fully cover their hair and painting their nails, drawing the ire of conservatives, Dawn writes.
The decision marks another step toward social progress under Iran’s relatively moderate President Hassan Rouhani, though some Iranians question just how large of a step it is.
