Karabakh occupants fire at Azerbaijani border post

Armenia continues to commit provocations against the border combat positions of the Gazakh border division of the Border Guards of Azerbaijan's State Border Service located on the contact line of troops on the state border of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the State Border Service said in a statement.

The positions of the Azerbaijani border post in the direction of Farakhli village of the Gazakh region were fired by the snipers from the positions of the Armenian armed forces located near Shavarshavan village of Noyemberyan district yesterday at 18:30 (GMT+4).

As a result, a military truck, moving along the road in the rear of combat positions, was fired. The servicemen were not injured.

The attack was suppressed by return fire.

Leading analyst of the Agency for Political and Economic Communications Mikhail Neyzhmakov noted, speaking with Vestnik Kavkaza, that Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reasons to continue the confrontational policy of his predecessors and political opponents, leaders of the Karabakh clan and instigators of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan.

"It is worth paying attention to Nikol Pashinyan’s desire to increase support from security agencies, as well as position the current Armenian government as a force capable of tough actions in Karabakh. Therefore, in the short term, Armenia's tougher actions in the conflict zone will completely coincide with the line of conduct of Yerevan and Nikol Pashinyan's internal political goals," he said in the first place.

"If we consider, for example, the internal political interests of the current Armenian Prime Minister, it is objectively more profitable for him to be associated with a tougher line on Karabakh in order to avoid further accusations from opponents of the intention to conduct backroom bargaining on concessions to Azerbaijan," the leading analyst of the Agency for Political and Economic Communications stressed.

"At the same time, a longer escalation of the conflict can create too serious domestic political risks for the incumbent Armenian Prime Minister. In addition, international experience shows that for the opposition politician who came to power on a protest wave, like Nikol Pashinyan, the threat of losing power increases noticeably when reliance on security agencies starts to play a noticeably large role in his political survival. Therefore, it is still more profitable the current Armenian Prime Minister, as far as it depends on him, to avoid excessive tension on the line of contact," Mikhail Neyzhmakov emphasized.

Earlier, editor-in-chief of 'National Defense' magazine Igor Korotchenko stressed that despite the change in power, Armenia continues to ignore the implementation of the four UN Security Council resolutions on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"First of all we must clearly understand the thesis of equitable settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. And in addition to the tremendous efforts made by Baku and international sites, and the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's work, an equitable settlement requires raising the status of expert groups that will monitor and give their recommendations and unbiased, honest analytics on the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone. This would contribute to the implementation of those UN Security Council resolutions that are known to everyone and which, unfortunately, are ignored by one of the parties to the conflict," he said.
