Karabakh problem settlement moves into active phase

The Nagorno Karabakh conflict will be discussed in a more dynamic manner and will find its solution, the National Adviser to the President of Azerbaijan on Social Political Issues Ali Hasanov stated.

"We, as Azerbaijan, are an integral part of international relations, actors of global politics. There are certain requirements of the United Nations Security Council Charter, which we must follow. There are provisions of the international law, according to which such conflicts should be resolved peacefully. But at the same time, there are four UN resolutions, according to which occupied Azerbaijani lands should be liberated. None of it is fulfilled," Trend quoted Ali Hasanov as saying.

He mentioned the use of double standards. "After the occupation of Kuwait, provisions of the international law and will of the international community were fulfilled in a short time - Kuwait was liberated from the occupation in one week. Such cases also happened in other places. However four UN resolutions related to Nagorno-Karabakh are not implemented for over 20 years. This is an indication of presence of different standards in the international relations," he explained.

Commenting on what recently happened on the frontline, Ali Hasanov recalled that since April 4th, all international organizations urged Baku and Yerevan to cease fire. "Of course they have a right to do it, the international law requires the conflict to be resolved peacefully. So Azerbaijan was forced to stop the war, and Russian President Vladimir Putin played the main role in this," he said.

He also noted that Azerbaijan, as an element of the international law, has to comply with the international law and the international community's demands. "Processes in Vienna showed that Azerbaijan spoke to the co-chair countries in a more demanding way. Azerbaijan has a right to do it. The Armenian side, on the other hand, dealt with research of others will. They demonstrated position of wishing to maintain the status quo by delaying the negotiation process using different methods and combinations," Hasanov noted.

As the candidate of historical sciences, political analyst Oleg Kuznetsov stressed in an interview to Vestnik Kavkaza, no one in the world doubted or doubts Azerbaijan's territorial integrity. "As the President of Russia Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said, no one doubts the necessity of return of the occupied territories in Nagorno Karabakh itself and around it," he reminded.

According to him, Azerbaijan has every right to use any means necessary to establish sovereignty in its entire territory and to return the occupied districts under its jurisdiction - and this makes its desire to resolve of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict peacefully even more valuable.

"As for Russia's position on this issue, our officials will never adhere to double standards," Oleg Kuznetsov expressed confidence.

Recall, on the night of April 2 all frontier positions of Azerbaijan were exposed to heavy fire from large-caliber weapons, mortars, grenade launchers and guns. In addition, Azerbaijani settlements near the front line, densely populated by civilians, were shelled.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20% of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US, are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
