Kazakh coal miners stage sit-in

About 700 coal miners in Kazakhstan are demanding to improve working conditions and a wage rise, the minister of Labor and Social Protection of Kazakhstan Tamara Duisenova said.

"According to latest data submitted by the Karaganda region akimat, now 684 miners in eight coal mines are protesting. 32 of them are in talks with the employers, 4 people from each 8 mines sent their representatives," AKIpress cited her as saying.

It was reported on Monday that about 200 coal miners refused to leave four mines operated by a unit of ArcelorMittal at the end of their shift and staged a sit-in, the company said in a statement.
