Kazakhstan celebrates Day of Astana

Kazakhstan celebrates the national holiday of the Day of Capital City of Astana today.

On 6 July 1994, the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan accepted the decree 'On the transfer of the capital of Kazakhstan'.  After the capital of Kazakhstan was moved to Akmola on 10 December 1997, the city was consequently renamed Astana in 1998.

The corresponding decision was made by the Kazakh Supreme Council on July 6th, the same day is President Nursultan Nazarbayev's birthday.

A number of festive activities are being held in the city these days.
