Kazakhstan holds national day of mourning

Kazakhstan is holding a day of national mourning on January 10  for those who lost their lives due to massive countrywide protests.

The number of fatalities during unrest in Kazakhstan has amounted to 164.

According to the Ministry of Health, 103 people have died in Almaty since riots hit Kazakhstan. Twenty-one people were killed in the Kyzylorda Region, ten people in the Zhambyl Region and eight people in the Almaty Region.

“In connection with the numerous human casualties as a result of tragic events in a number of regions of the country, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev decided to declare January 10, 2022, a day of national mourning," Press Secretary Berik Uali wrote on Facebook. earlier

The relevant decree was published on the presidency's Akorda website.

Protests erupted in several Kazakh cities on January 2, escalating into mass riots with government buildings getting ransacked in several cities a few days later. The ensuing violence left scores of people injured, with fatalities also reported. Subsequently, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev turned to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), requesting assistance from the Russia-led bloc. As a result, peacekeepers have already been deployed to Kazakhstan. Law and order, Kazakh authorities affirm, was restored to all of the country’s regions by January 7.
