Kazakhstan to receive $150 million to create low-enriched uranium bank

Several countries and the fund ‘’Initiative to reduce the nuclear threat" have provided $150 million to create a bank of low-enriched uranium in Kazakhstan.

"Funding for this project is made up of voluntary contributions from the following countries and organizations: the Foundation 'Initiative to reduce the nuclear threat' – $50 million, Norway – $5 million, the US – $49.54 million, the UAE – $ 10 million, the EU – up to 25 million euros and Kuwait – $10 million," the Foreign Ministry reported. Kazakhstan will bear the costs only for the storage of nuclear material, the ministry explained.

In 2009, Kazakhstan took the initiative to host the international nuclear fuel bank under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It will be at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk in the east of the country. The agreement between Kazakhstan and the IAEA on the establishment of a bank will be signed in late August of this year.
