Armenia's Special Investigation Service has submitted a petition to prolong the arrest of Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan for another two months, according to Kocharyan’s defense team.
The petition will be examined today at 12.30 p.m. in Yerevan court of general jurisdiction chaired by judge Armen Bektashyan, News.am reported.
Kocharyan, who served two terms as president in 1998-2008, is charged with toppling constitutional order in collusion with other persons in 2008 March. He was detained on July 26, 2018 for two months in pre-trial detention pending investigation. However, he was released from custody on June 13 after the Court of Appeals ruled that he could not be prosecuted for the 2008 March 1 post-election violence.
On January 18, the court upheld the petition of the SIS investigator and prolonged Kocharyan’s arrest. The defense team submitted a petition against it, but the court denied it.
