Kyrgyzstan militia could be transformed into police

Kyrgyzstan's government is looking at transforming the republic's militia into police, Prime Minister Sapar Isakov said at the second national conference on security and crime prevention policy.

He elaborated on the difference between militia and police: "Militia is a militaristic authoritarian militarized structure, according to explanations existing since the Soviet times. Militia is oriented on the statistics process and minimal public influence on their activities. Police is a state law enforcement body despite the fact that police in Greek stands for 'state' or 'city', the conceptual tasks of which are cooperation, communication with the public community and citizens."

Isakov said he assigned the Government the task to study reforming militia into police, AKIpress reported.

The prime minister added that the transition requires certain amount of funds and requires systematic approach.
